The City of Antwerp decided to create a tender for dynamic speed signs in accordance to their current general traffic policy. The objective was to reduce the number of traffic victims. Since reducing the maximum speed limit during school hours results in shorter braking and thus less accidents. Commissioned by Spie Belgium, Surtronic designed a dynamic zone-30-, zone-50- and zone-70-LED sign, according to Flemish Region specifications and in compliance to the European standard 12966.
Many of the zone-30-signs are equipped with environmental friendly solar panels which enable them to operate independent from a power network. Moreover, the signs can be included in the control system ABBA (Automatic Distance Control and Security) of the Flemish Region at any time.
